How Good Food Can Change Human Mood
While talking about food, we all have so many different memories in mind where we've experienced an emotional connection somewhere like if you're from a city and have a routine of eating things like vada pav, bhajiya, khaman, petis, nachos, beverages, etc. Or if you're from a village, there are special foods that are only available there. You grew up with that, and now you miss them just because you've moved to another place. We connect with each food we've experienced and grown up eating in our routine life, and now it's unavailable.
Why Can Good Food Change Mood?
Our mood changes when we eat good food because it directly affects our brain and body. When your brain and body are healthy, your mood automatically improves, and you feel good. Good food lets you experience or feel deeply satisfied and fulfilled. When I eat "khaja," it instantly reminds me that this food was always sent to me by my grandmother from another city. That feeling and emotion literally give me peace and fix my mood. Good food can release positive stimulation, and nostalgia-linked foods trigger past memories that are emotionally connected.
What Is My Experience?
If I talk about my experience, I like to eat things made by my mom, and many times, similar things at restaurants as well. There are many things I like "gajar ka halwa," "rasgulla," "fried fish," etc. and my mood instantly improves if I'm sad or lost in thought. When I feel like there's so much happening in life and my mood isn't good, I remind myself that life isn't as boring or hard as I'm making it out to be in my head because I can still find a food I really love, and that alone can change my mood instantly. In my experience, it's a good way to quickly fix a mood swing so your mind stays happier.
What About My Friends?
I was trying to find out if good food can really change mood for others as well, so I observed my friends some of them are the kind of people who stay happy regardless of whether the food is good or not. But many times, they need this too. Let me share an incident: once, my friend came to my home to meet me because he was stressed from work pressure, and his mood wasn't good. He said, "Bhai, mood bohot kharab hai, bohot work pressure hai, aur seriously dimag ka dahi ho gaya hai." I sat there listening. I thought it was just work pressure and it would get better once things settled down but at the same time, I realized that in life, we all have work pressure, and we can't just wait for it to be fine "once things settle." So I offered him, "Let's go eat aloo puri." He said, "Let's go," and we went and ate that dish while continuing our conversation. After eating, his mood improved, and he started smiling, saying, "Kaam ka kya hai, chalta rehta hai, ye kha ke maza aa gaya." That's when I realized that the food we love can really make a difference in our life.
Food at Weddings
When we go to a wedding, many people actually have food on their minds, not just the couple getting married. Many people go to a wedding function just to eat good, loved food. When you go to a wedding hosted by someone in your life not just relatives, but someone connected to you through your society, your workplace, friends, or even friends of friends trying the food there, food that's different from what you regularly eat, is its own kind of loved experience.
Cultural Foods
There are many dishes made in different styles, and they vary across different cultures trying these unique cultural specialties is always a good experience, and it brings satisfaction and enthusiasm. Trying different cultural foods has been a wonderful experience for me, and we should respect everyone's cultural food, since each dish is made with a cultural touch that's unique in its own way. These things make us happier, and trying different foods can genuinely heal your mood and lift your spirits. As we know, we only feel truly happy once our stomach is full without food, our brain stays stuck on other things. So when you're stressed and your mood isn't okay, try eating something you love, and your mood will start to fix itself.
Good Food or Healthy Food?
I believe healthy food is important in our stressful lives, as it keeps our body healthy and keeps us away from doctors. But the food we love can instantly fix our mood and brain. When you're happy from the inside, you can handle everything else. So I think we should balance both healthy food for the body, and the food we love for the mood. When someone sends you your loved food, it triggers past memories, and eating it satisfies both your mood and your inner feelings just like when my grandmother sends me my loved food.
